BRAZILIAN PANIC.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Brazilian girls have taken to hiding there hair inside shirts and
blouses as the country is gripped by a hair-snipping panic, notes the
Daily Telegraph, 19 Sept 1991.
Starting in the city of Belo Horizonte, the scare spread to Rio de
Janeiro, and the police estimate that hundreds of long-haired girls
have been "SCALPED". The authorites attribute the crimes to gangs of
three or four youths working for local hairdressers, who pay up to 50
per pound of hair used to make wigs or hair weaves.
One victim, journalism student Leila Pereira, said: "I crossed a
square on my way to college when three men approached me. One suddenly
held me from behind, another secured my head while the third pulled
out a pair of scissors and cut off more than half my hair".
